Greater Portland Inc Response to Amazon HQ2 Short-list Announcement

January 18,2018 | By Janet LaBar
Many of you have seen this morning’s announcement by Amazon’s of its selection of short-list markets for HQ2. While Greater Portland did not make the list, there are three takeaways GPI has from the process:
1. Regional collaboration works!
  • Four communities—Beaverton, Clark County, Milwaukie and Portland—each put forward solid proposals, and cooperation among all four (with some help from AECOM) led to a regional, distributed campus option.
  • Higher education and workforce development partners contributed both as a whole “system” and individually to share how they can deliver on Amazon’s talent and innovation needs.
  • Business Oregon, Washington State Dept of Commerce, CREDC, TAO, Metropolitan Mayors Consortium, PBA, PGE, Travel Portland, Metro, and so many others provided support, content and energy toward the region’s bid.
2. Our value proposition is strong. 3. We were and still are in a national conversation.
  • The exposure for Greater Portland as a location for HQ2 beats any paid advertising campaign we could’ve developed. From the New York Times article, to today’s mention in USA Today—and the countless stories, blogs, tweets, and even betting sites in between—the regional effort led by GPI let the world know that Greater Portland is open for business.
GPI's Board of Directors provided tremendous support to the team and GPI's member communities on this proposal. Special thanks to GPI Chairman Wally Van Valkenburg for sharing his take and regional vision on the project. Although this was a unique project, GPI has 40+ more in the hopper. Our work to attract more business, investment and jobs continues.
As always, thank you for your leadership and support of GPI,
