Greater Portland Inc heads to D.C. to recruit foreign companies

June 21,2018 | By Anna Marum
Representatives from Greater Portland Inc, along with state and regional partners, are in Washington D.C. this week for the 2018 SelectUSA Investment Summit. The annual event serves as a showcase of American markets to potential foreign direct investors.
This marks the fourth consecutive year members of Greater Portland Inc’s business development team are attending the summit to build relationships with international site selectors and business professionals. These relationships – and the countless others that Greater Portland fosters – result in projects and ultimately jobs for our region.
Thanks to relationships formed through SelectUSA events, firms from Canada and Korea are currently considering investing in the Greater Portland region.
The investment summit offers our team an opportunity to have face-to-face meetings with important decision-makers from throughout the world, and to present our region as one of the best places to do business for firms in our six key clusters: computers and electronics, athletic and outdoor, health science and technology, metals and machinery, software and media, and clean technology.
Greater Portland Inc has meetings scheduled with companies based in Europe, Asia, and North and South America.
Foreign direct investment delivers an outsized contribution to the U.S. economy, and as of 2016 was responsible for more than 41,000 jobs in the Greater Portland region.
“Continued investment from foreign firms is critical to our region’s economic growth because compared to their local counterparts, these investments are typically larger and add higher-paying jobs,” said Janet LaBar, Greater Portland Inc’s president and CEO. “We’re looking forward to fruitful meetings at SelectUSA, and we’re eager to share the region’s strengths and bring more global companies to the area.”
The region’s strengths include a talented and educated workforce, excellent global connectivity and the most competitive cost of doing business on the West Coast.
