Greater Portland Inc celebrates Economic Development Week

May 06,2019 | By Anna Marum
In honor of Economic Development Week, Greater Portland Inc will be celebrating the practitioners and partners that make our region’s successes possible.

As the region’s economic development organization, GPI serves seven counties in two states.

Our mission is to enhance prosperity for everyone in Greater Portland. The primary ways we do this is through attracting new companies and helping existing companies and entrepreneurs grow their businesses. Additionally, we convene regional leaders who work together on workforce, infrastructure and business climate issues. This work elevates the region’s competitiveness in a global economy.

Our progress wouldn’t be possible with the support of our partners. As a public-private partnership, GPI is supported by nearly 90 entities. These entities include 25 municipalities, two ports, 10 higher education institutions, three utilities, and more than 40 private companies across a wide range of sectors.

In 2018, GPI helped recruit 10 new companies to Greater Portland, resulting in more than 1,300 total jobs and $74 million in added income for the region. Notable GPI wins include Element Six’s $94-million diamond manufacturing facility in Gresham, Genentech’s access solutions center in Northeast Portland and cryptocurrency exchange platform Coinbase’s office in downtown Portland.

We’re proud of the work we do and we’re grateful to our partners for helping us make it possible. Watch our social media channels this week to learn more about our region’s strengths and successes. Join us in celebrating Economic Development Week by sharing some of the projects or initiatives in your communities, companies or organizations that are making Greater Portland a better region for all.
