PORTLAND, OREGON – Greater Portland Inc is pleased to announce that Gert Boyle, Chairman of Columbia Sportswear Company, will be honored with GPI’s 2018 Uniting Regionally Award.

Boyle, recognizable for her appearances as “Ma Boyle” and “One Tough Mother” in Columbia Sportswear ads, has grown into a beloved regional icon for her strength in leadership, her philanthropy and her achievement in growing a local family company into an admired global brand.

GPI will present Boyle with the award at Greater Portland Inc’s 2018 Annual Economic Summit on Sept. 13. This is especially fitting, as the Summit will celebrate people as the region’s greatest asset. Boyle, now 94, is a representation of the outsize effect one person can have on the growth of our region.

“Greater Portland Inc has been driving growth and economic development in our region for many years,” said Boyle. “They are a key to the success of Columbia Sportswear Company, its community and consumers.”

The Uniting Regionally Award recognizes a public or private sector individual, collective, or organization’s efforts to advance Greater Portland’s economic prosperity. GPI’s mission is centered on helping to unite the many different organizations in the region around this shared goal.

The individual, collective, or organization honored with this recognition has:
  • Actively demonstrated the values of regionalism by working to grow prosperity for all throughout the Greater Portland region
  • Shared in promoting the importance of the uniting regionally through ambassadorship, marketing, collaboration, partnership or established business practices
In addition to celebrating Boyle, attendees will have the opportunity to hear from several regional and national leaders as they explore the ways investing in our entrepreneurs, educators, businesses and communities can drive returns to our region’s advancing economy.

Keynote speaker Elaine Waxman, a senior fellow at the Washington, D.C.-based Urban Institute’s Income and Benefits Policy Center, will share her research findings on improving access to upward mobility for all workers.

The event will also feature a panel of experts, including Mark Mitsui, President of Portland Community College and the former Deputy Assistant Secretary in the Office of Career, Technical and Adult Education for the U.S.

Department of Education; Shane Bemis, mayor of Gresham and chair of the Youth Involvement Task Force at United States Conference of Mayors; and Astrid Scholz, CEO of Sphaera and a founder of XXcelerate Fund, which supports high-performing women entrepreneurs.

The Summit is a key moment in the year that allows the region’s brightest and most influential leaders to come together to imagine a future driven by every person in our community.

In addition to Presenting Sponsor Bank of America, GPI would like to thank all the generous event sponsors, including PGE, The Standard, JPMorgan Chase, Oregon State University, Port of Vancouver, Spirit Media, The Boeing Company and the Portland Business Journal.
