Greater Portland is globally connected and domestically accessible – the best of both worlds. A commuter’s paradise, the region is known for its amazing bicycle network and reliable public transit. With TriMet buses, MAX light-rail and the expanding streetcar network, it’s easy to navigate the city without a car. Six percent of commuters use public transit to get to work, and an impressive 3% bike or walk, which ranks the region among the top 10 in the country.

Greater Portland Export Initiative

With annual exports of more than $21 billion, Greater Portland was one of only four regions in the nation that doubled exports in the past decade. Now, after a year of study in cooperation with the Brookings Institution, Greater Portland has developed a new strategy that is expected to double regional exports over the next five years.

Based on the market assessment and discussions with regional stakeholders, Greater Portland developed its Export Initiative, encompassing four strategies.

Innovative Research and Development

Greater Portland invests heavily in research and development and ranks in the top third against all US metros with over a million residents.

Case in point—the OUS/OHSU Collaborative Life Sciences Building (CLSB) project is a partnership between three universities; Oregon Health & Science University; Oregon State University; and Portland State University.

Benefits include expanding research activities and creating new employment opportunities.
